Twerk class

Why Twerk?

Why twerk?

We chose twerk as a dance class because it's more than movement—it's a space for community, confidence, and joy. Twerk celebrates the body exactly as it is, building strength, mobility, and cardiovascular fitness while deepening body awareness and connection. In this class, we move together, laugh together, and support one another, creating a welcoming environment where self-expression and empowerment come first. Twerk is freedom, fun, and fitness—all in one.

Roots of Twerk

Twerk class in action

Bouncing the pelvis in a squat position is one of the first movements a human does when introduced to music in early stages of life. If you watch any baby dance for the first time this is highly likely what you will see them do. This natural way of dancing has been lost in many cultures across the globe but in some it is still rich in society and we are grateful to have it fed back to us at this point in time.

We each have our own story about how twerk came into our lives which you can read about on our About Us page but historically this dance has been performed by those with African and/or Caribbean heritage and is part of a way of celebrating life in many countries expressed in many different styles with many different names.

The word "Twerk" came from the streets of the deep south of North America where the words "to" and "work" were put together to describe someone that was dancing with a heavy accent on the pelvis to HipHop music.

There are so many ways you can dance with your pelvis and it can be seen all over the world in many different cultures performed in many different ways; you'll find it in Polynesia, Hawaii is famous for the Hula and across the Middle East and North Africa there is belly dancing and there are connections between twerking and womb yoga.

For us moving our pelvis in this way creates a sense of acceptance and honour of the whole body.

Our Mission

Our mission is to create a welcoming, women-centred space where movement, pelvic connection, and community support self-expression, healing, and empowerment.

Through our school and growing community, we aim to spread the pelvic power movement throughout the South West and beyond. We envision longer courses, teacher trainings, and, in time, a dedicated studio space that serves as a community hub.

We honour and respect the Black origins and cultural lineage of twerk, womb wisdom, and dance, engaging with these practices through education, humility, gratitude, and care.

We prioritise sisterhood over competition and welcome every body and every journey. Through movement, we support women to trust their bodies and experience joy, confidence, and liberation.

Core Ethics

  1. Community, Not Competition — We come together to collaborate, support, and uplift one another. This is a shared space, not a place to compare.

  2. Sisterhood Is Central — We honour, celebrate, and respect each other in all our differences. This is a space of mutual care and solidarity.

  3. Your Body Is Your Teacher — We encourage you to listen to your body as your number one guide. This may look like modifying movements, asking for adjustments, taking rest, or choosing to sit something out.

  4. Welcoming to All — We offer a warm welcome to everyone — both new and returning students. You belong here.

  5. Presence & Respect — We give our full presence and attention to whoever is speaking or teaching, creating a space of respect, safety, and shared focus.

  6. Consistency is Key — We aim to show up for our regular classes without fail so you know where to find us.

  7. Be Yourself — Being yourself is key to bringing your own flare to your dance. Anything is possible but accepting where you're at is the key to success.

  8. Consent & Choice — Consent is foundational. You are always invited — never expected — to participate in any movement, interaction, or expression. Your "no" is honoured, and your autonomy is respected at all times.

  9. Cultural Respect & Responsibility — We acknowledge and honour the many origins of twerk and pelvic movement and commit to engaging with this practice with respect, education, and integrity. We move with awareness of the cultural lineage we are part of and take responsibility for how we hold and share this dance.

  10. Joy Without Judgment — This is a space to explore, try, jiggle, laugh, and be seen without shame. There is no "right" way to look — only your way. We release judgment of ourselves and others and make room for joy, curiosity, and growth.
