When people hear "twerk class," their minds often jump to certain assumptions. Let's clear up some of the most common misconceptions about this powerful form of movement.
Myth 1: You need to be flexible
Absolutely not! Twerk is accessible to all body types and fitness levels. The movements can be modified to suit your current range of motion, and flexibility actually improves as you practice. Many of our students started with zero dance experience.
Myth 2: It's only for young people
Our classes welcome women of all ages. In fact, some of our most enthusiastic students are in their 40s, 50s, and beyond. The hip movements in twerk are actually fantastic for joint mobility and can help counteract the effects of sitting at a desk all day.
Myth 3: It's not a "real" workout
Try holding a squat pulse for three minutes while isolating your hips and tell me it's not a workout! Twerk engages your glutes, core, thighs, and lower back. Students regularly report feeling the burn for days after their first class. It's a full lower-body strength session disguised as a dance party.
Myth 4: You need rhythm
Rhythm can be learned! We break down every movement slowly, and you'd be surprised how quickly your body picks up the patterns. Plus, in our beginner classes, we focus on the mechanics first before adding music. By the time the beat drops, your body already knows what to do.
Myth 5: It's inappropriate
Twerk has deep roots in West African dance traditions. What we teach is about body awareness, muscle control, and feminine expression. Our studio is a judgment-free space where women come to feel empowered in their bodies. There's nothing inappropriate about celebrating what your body can do.
